WUHAN, China -- Zheng Qinwen has officially withdrawn from the Wuhan Open, citing a shoulder injury. This announcement came just a day after she celebrated her first WTA title in two years at the China Open, where she triumphed over Mirra Andreeva in the final.
Zheng, who entered the China Open as a wildcard ranked No. 54, showcased her resilience by defeating the fourth seed Andreeva 7-5, 6-4. Following her victory, she expressed her joy by singing karaoke for the enthusiastic crowd, stating, 'The feeling was incredible. To win here in Beijing in front of my home crowd is one of my dreams.'
Despite her recent success, Zheng acknowledged the toll that her intense schedule has taken on her body. In a statement released by the WTA, she said, 'Since returning from injury, I have played a demanding stretch of tennis over the past month and a half, competing at the U.S. Open, the Billie Jean King Cup, and the China Open. My body is feeling very fatigued after this intense run of matches.'
Zheng's victory in Beijing marked a significant comeback after her ranking plummeted from a career-high No. 4 last year to No. 160 this season due to an elbow injury. The win not only ended her two-year title drought but also positioned her to return to the top 30 in the WTA rankings.
Both Zheng and Andreeva, who also withdrew from the Wuhan Open due to a change in schedule, will be replaced in the draw by 'lucky losers' from qualifying. Anna Bondar will take Andreeva's place, while Camila Osorio will step in for Zheng. The singles main draw for the Wuhan Open commenced on Monday.
