The race for year-end No. 1 changed the moment Jannik Sinner shut down his season. Alexander Zverev is now the player in front, and Carlos Alcaraz is the one who still has a chance to chase him.

Sinner said on October 6 that he will not play again in 2026. He is still being treated for a knee injury. He has not been on court since he won Wimbledon in July, and he will miss the rest of the indoor swing, including the ATP Finals. His plan is to be ready for 2027.
That decision does not drop him from the top of the weekly rankings overnight. Those rankings count the last 52 weeks. The year-end prize is a different list: the Race to Turin, which counts only the points earned this season. Sinner can still be the name beside No. 1 on Monday and be out of the race for the trophy that is handed out in November.

Zverev already leads that race. He moved in front after winning the US Open, his second major of 2026 after Roland Garros. The ATP’s latest Shanghai update has him 810 points ahead of Sinner in the live race. Alcaraz is 4,200 points back. Ben Shelton is still close enough to remain a mathematical possibility, but the gap says this is Zverev’s race to lose.
Shanghai can end it
The ATP says a semifinal in Shanghai would lock up Zverev’s first year-end No. 1. He can also clinch it if Alcaraz and Shelton both lose before the week is over. Either path would finish a season that already includes two majors.
The harder part for Zverev is the match in front of him. A ranking this close can pull a player’s attention past the next point. The tennis that built the lead is the tennis he still has to play.

Alcaraz no longer has a simple job of catching Sinner. He has to catch Zverev, and he has to do it while Zverev is still adding points. An outstanding week in Shanghai can keep the race open. An early loss can help shut it.
Sinner’s absence is the sober part of the story. The ranking clock does not stop because a player needs a knee to heal. Walking away from the rest of the year can cost a place that took seasons to earn. He chose the next season over this one.
The last weeks of 2026 now belong to three different goals. Sinner wants to come back healthy. Alcaraz wants to keep a long shot alive. Zverev wants to turn his best major season into a year-end No. 1. Shanghai will show whether that chase is already over.
