Daniil Medvedev is back in the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals after defeating longtime rival Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets. Medvedev, the fifth seed, won 6-4, 7-5, showcasing his skill and determination on the court.
This victory marks a significant achievement for Medvedev, as he becomes only the fourth player in history to reach the last eight of the tournament in three consecutive years. The other players to accomplish this feat are tennis legends Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray.
The match between Medvedev and Tsitsipas was notable for its lack of drama, especially considering their history of verbal flare-ups in previous encounters. Their rivalry has seen intense moments, including a heated exchange during the Australian Open semifinals in 2022.
In other matches, 20-year-old Rafael Jodar continued his impressive run by coming back from a set down for the third straight match. He defeated Botic Van De Zandschulp 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2, having previously rallied to win against Thiago Agustin Tirante and Jiri Lehecka in earlier rounds.
Next up for Jodar is a challenging match against Casper Ruud, who advanced after fourth-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime retired due to a suspected knee injury while trailing 5-2 in the first set.
Tommy Paul also secured a spot in the quarterfinals, winning 7-6(5), 6-4 against Zizou Bergs, who had previously upset Carlos Alcaraz. Paul will face Medvedev in the next round.
The quarterfinal lineup in the top half of the draw is now set. It features top-seeded Alexander Zverev taking on Alex de Minaur, while Arthur Gea will face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
